About the Trip

Dear family and friends,

This spring I will be embarking on a medical mission to remote villages in Nepal to help provide primary healthcare to a large number of people who would otherwise be without access to these services.  The organization is called Himalayan Healthcare (HHC) and since 1992 they have provided humanitarian assistance including healthcare, community education, and income generation with the commitment to create sustainable development programs.  HHC is an all volunteer organization that is not for profit, non-governmental, and non-denominational that provides assistance to a large lower caste population plagued with poverty associated with subsistence farming.  Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world and has been mired with issues such as malnutrition, lack of vaccines, rudimentary education, and a recent civil war.
From March 27 to April 10, I am participating in one of HHC’s biannual medical treks.  The itinerary is to meet the group of approximately twenty medical professionals in Kathmandu and then set out by bus to the foothills of the Himalayas and then trek along with several dozen porters over several mountain passes to the villages of Sherthung and Jharlang in the Dhading region near the Tibet border.  The goals will be for the villagers often traveling by foot to see medical professionals, to help train the local healthcare workers, and provide community health education.  We will focus on the treatment of illness, infectious diseases, prenatal care, nutrition, sanitation, and other long term disease prevention.  Other ways HHC have helped in the region are the establishment of permanent health posts, the support of promising young students, literacy classes, village midwife programs, volunteer family planning, and other humanitarian measures that would be unobtainable from government or other organizations.
Please help me in my efforts to participate with this worthy cause and make a donation to help offset the cost of volunteering. HHC provides the funding for the care and training given to the villagers, the medical volunteers such as myself must fund our own travel expenses, including airfare and trip fees. Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

I have set up a Paypal account for donations: www.paypal.com and then direct funds to my account which is listed under my email address: agkraus@gmail.com. Also checks will be accepted under my name at 2310 SE 22nd Ave. #3 Portland, OR 97214

The organization’s website is www.himalayan-healthcare.org
Sincerely, Andrew
